New Principal of OCA

We are please to announce that we have secured our next principal, Rabbi Akevy Greenblatt, beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year. After a three-month-long nationwide search process, including close to thirty applicants, the search committee is truly gratified to have emerged with a candidate of Rabbi Greenblatt's character and qualifications. The search committee made its unanimous recommendation to the Board of Directors who voted unanimously to install Rabbi Greenblatt as Principal. We made our recommendation based on Rabbi Greenblatt's impressive resume, which includes more than a decade of experience in Jewish educational administration, our impressions and evaluations of several interviews, and the results of nine reference checks. We hope the community will share in our excitement as we welcome Rabbi Greenblatt to Baltimore.

Rabbi Greenblatt is currently the Judaic Studies Lower School Principal at the Margolin Hebrew Academy in Memphis TN, and a member of the administrative team for the Margolin Hebrew Academy/Finestone Yeshivas of the South, a Pre K-12 school. Rabbi Greenblatt has been involved in education for the last 20 years and is a leading change agent in trying to incorporate 21st Century skills in all areas of the curriculum, including Judaic studies. He believes that meeting students' needs and differentiated instruction are at the core of teaching. He has approximately 2,000 followers on his Twitter account, @Akevy613, and maintains a very active blog, in which he shares his thoughts on a variety of educational subjects. He has taken a leadership role in organizing the collaboration of Jewish educational technology teachers nationally as one of the founders of JedChat, as well as a member of Connected Principals and a frequent presenter at conferences. He is very comfortable with blended learning and has a good working relationship with the Avi Chai Foundation, to which Ohr Chadash Academy has made a number of grant applications.

Rabbi Greenblatt received semicha from the Derech Ayson Rabbinical Seminary, Yeshiva of Far Rockaway. He holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from Queens College, City University of NY, and a master's degree in education from the University of Hartford. He also spent two years at Yeshivat Sha'alvim in Israel. Rabbi Greenblatt has extensive teaching and administrative experience at a number of schools in different communities, including Oak Park, MI, Yeshivat Rambam in Baltimore in the late 90's, West Hartford, Calgary, Atlanta, and for the past six years in Memphis. While in Baltimore, he also worked as an administrator for Camp Shoresh for three years. In addition, Rabbi Greenblatt has a principal's certification from Seton Hall University.

Rabbi Greenblatt was the one applicant who repeatedly stressed his desire to be involved in the formative stages of growing Ohr Chadash together with his continued desire for professional growth. He fully identifies, both personally and professionally, with the vision of Ohr Chadash Academy and, in his words, “will strive — as the face of the school — to develop its full potential.” He will assume his new duties on July 1st and will be involved in the transition of leadership during the preceding months.

The Search Committee would like to thank the founding principals, Mrs. Janet Forsythe and Mrs. Esti Ziffer for their tireless efforts in establishing the foundation upon which Rabbi Greenblatt will continue to build.
